Trad climbing - content of this course

In our trad climbing course, we learn how to move safely and efficiently on traditional multi-pitch routes. From securing yourself, building a belay, planning and various problem-solving skills, you will learn everything you need to climb in this terrain. The mountains of the Pyrenees offer an ideal terrain to learn the different techniques.

We cover the following topics during our climbing course:

  • Placing gear like friends and nuts and how to trust them
  • Aid climbing - overcoming crux sections
  • Building a belay with mobile protection
  • Half rope technique
  • Scrambling on easy terrain
  • Way finding, planning and weather

Requirements

Safe lead climbing on rock in grade 6 (UIAA) or 6a (French)

Abseiling with prusik

 

 

 

Gear you have to bring

Backpack (20 - 30 liters), climbing shoes, suitable approach shoes, rain jacket, warm clothing, sunscreen, water bottle, headlamp

Itinerary

Arrival takes place on Saturday. We drive together from Barcelona airport to Benasque on Saturday late afternoon. The climbing week runs from Sunday to Saturday. Departure is on Sunday, and we will drive back to Barcelona together in the morning.

The course takes place in Valle de Benasque. An ideal starting point for alpine climbing and climbing with mobile protection.

Saturday:

Arrival - Meet at Barcelona Airport at 5 p.m
Drive to Benasque (3.5 hours)

Sunday:

  • Getting to know the group
  • Basic knowledge of placing friends and nuts
  • Aid climbing - conveying confidence
  • Half rope technique

Monday:

  • Building a belay
  • First easy trad routes

Tuesday:

  • Scrambling in easy terrain and be safe

Wednesday:

  • Rescue techniques

Thursday:

  • Change of area - We climb in the neighboring valley (different rock, different landscape)

Friday:

  • Final route - The best comes last. We climb a longer trad route.

Saturday:

  • Climbing an alpine rocky ridge or a multi-pitch

Sunday

  • Departure in the morning - drive to Barcelona (3.5 hours)

What is included in the price

  • You get as much coaching as you want. By the end of the course, there should be no questions left unanswered. We want you to be confident in what you have learned here with us.
  • Climbing Siurana provides you with all the climbing equipment you need for the course(harness, helmets, ropes etc.), except for climbing shoes.
  • All the transportation cost from the airport Barcelona to the accommodation and to the rock is included.
  • We will take nice climbing pictures of you and the group. By the end of the course, you can take these with you as a souvenir.
  • Accident insurance for the activity

What is not included

  • Your costs for the travel to Barcelona are not included.
  • The accommodation is not included and has to be paid separately. We will rent an apartment together, and you should count with around 200€ for the whole week.
  • You have to bring your own climbing shoes.
  • Food is not included in the price. We will shop and cook together in the apartment.

Multipitch climbing course Siurana

Content of this Climbingcourse

During our multipitch climbing course we will show you how to climb safely and efficient through a longer route. Together we will learn the necessary techniques and strategies and put them to test during the 5 days in different multipitch climbs up to 250m length. We will visit different climbing areas around Siurana to experience the different rock types that Catalonia has to offer.

The following topics are part of the multipitch course:

  • Building anchors
  • Belay stance organization
  • belaying from a stance
  • Double-rope technique
  • planing of multipitch routes
  • Rappeling (abseiling) from longer routes
  • Problem-solving (what to do if something happens)

Details of the week

Arrival and departure take place over the weekend. The climbing course runs from Monday to Friday. Of course, we are happy to help you with organizing your arrival and departure. Accommodation is in our holiday house in Ulldemolins.

The multi-pitch climbing course generally takes place in the vicinity of Siurana. We will be in and around Siurana on days 1, 2, and 4. On Wednesday and Friday, we will travel a bit farther and visit climbing areas around Barcelona (Montserrat), Lleida, and Els Ports. Depending on the weather and the group, we will decide which area is best suited.

Monday:

  • Getting to know the group

  • Review of rappelling with backup

  • Rope team climbing

  • Belay station setup

  • Climbing a short first multi-pitch route

Tuesday:

  • Double-rope technique

  • Alternative belay stations

  • Climbing two short multi-pitch routes for practice

  • Rappelling with intermediate anchors

  • Route planning

Wednesday:

  • Climbing a first longer multi-pitch route

  • Route finding

  • Planning

  • Weather considerations

Thursday:

  • Problem solving and tips for rope rescue (pulley systems, ascending a fixed rope)

  • If applicable, placing cams and nuts

  • If applicable, fall training with manual belay devices

Friday:

  • Final tour – we plan and climb a long route together and put what we have learned into practice

From the gym to the rock

Course requirements

In case you already climbed once or more often in the gym or outdoors, this is the course for you. In one week you will learn everything from correct belaying, rope techniques and lead climbing. We will explain to you in detail the differences between indoor and outdoor climbing so in the future you can go outdoor climbing on your own and with big confidence.

The goal of this course is that you will be able to leadclimb safely on the rocks and in the gym.
